My Latest Paintings

Here are two oil paintings I did recently. I love knights, castles, swords and all things medieval, so you get a real taste of my world in these.

Red Knight - Original Oil Painting by Artist Waitsel Smith

I call this painting “The Red Knight.” My models were 1/6 scale figures.

As with most of my paintings, my favorite part is the sky and clouds, which I based on a photo.

Red Knight - Detail 2 - Oil Painting by Artist Waitsel Smith

This is a knight from the time of Richard the Lionheart. He wears the king’s coat of arms on his chest.

This oil painting is for sale from the artist. For price and details, email me at waitsel@waitsel.com

Model set-up for Red Knight painting. 1/6 scale figures of knight and horse.

These were my models for the Red Knight painting. I used a black background to start out and switched to a white one when I began working on the sky.

Set-up for Red Knight painting. I sat on the floor to paint most of this. Photos on right are of painting and models. I alternated between painting from the models and painting from photos of the models.

This next painting is an imagined landscape that I composed from four different photographs.

Scottish Castle with Heather - Original Oil Painting by Artist Waitsel Smith

I call this painting “Scottish Castle with Heather.”

Notice the contrast between sky and tree tops, with darker sky and lighter tree tops. This is a typical lighting effect in the mountains.

Scottish Castle with Heather - Detail 2 - Oil Painting by Artist Waitsel Smith

I love this type of sky – storm clouds with sunlight shining through, which typically takes place in late afternoon.

Scottish Castle with Heather - Detail 3 - Oil Painting by Artist Waitsel Smith

This is my favorite part of the painting. It reminds me of 19th Century American landscape painters.

Scottish Castle with Heather - Detail 4 - Original Oil Painting by Artist Waitsel Smith

Another detail I really like.

Scottish Castle with Heather - Detail 5 - Original Oil Painting by Artist Waitsel Smith

More stormy sky, more tree tops and a Scottish castle – all washed in late afternoon sun.

These paintings are for sale, but I also do commissions. If you’d like to see more of my work, go to www.creativeillustrator.net or email me at waitsel@waitsel.com
