Travel

Time to kick back and enjoy some R&R in an exotic location. Or, take on a challenging outdoor activity. These are some of my favorite places. Enjoy!

Riding a Bicycle – I have something in my life that helps keep me together – physically, mentally and spiritually. It’s called a bike. Others have gardening, yoga, fishing, horseback riding – I have biking. You gotta have something…

Fly Fishing the French Broad – In November, 2012, seven buddies and I went to Lake Toxaway, NC for a fishing trip. Even though we stayed on the lake, we fly fished on the nearby French Broad River. It was fabulous.

Hiking Biltmore – Part 3 – Fall Color – On this trip, I retrace some of our steps on the Garden Trail, looking for great examples of fall color.

Hiking Biltmore: Part 2 – Early Autumn – A continuation of the trails around the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, including the Westover Trails, the Farm Trail that goes along the French Broad River and the Arbor Trace Trail, all of which originate, more or less, at Antler Hill Village.

Hiking Biltmore – Part 1 – A lot of people have been through the house, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains around Asheville, NC; but the house is just the tip of the iceberg. There are 8,000 acres on Biltmore Estate, with so much to do that you feel like you’re at a resort – which you are. But one of the best and cheapest things to do is just to hike the grounds. This part includes the Garden and Bass Pond Trails, Deer Park Trail and the Lagoon Trail.

My Latest Work – Pirate Illustrations for the Travel Channel – I was asked to do some illustrations for a series on The Travel Channel called “Hidden City,” dealing with infamous crimes in places that people like to visit. One of the episodes was about the Florida Keys, and involved a notorious pirate named Black Caesar, who roamed the Keys in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.

Hit the Road! – For generations, Americans have “found themselves” by hitting the road and discovering America, and many of them did that on Route 66. It’s time we hit the Mother Road again.

Meet Me in Rome! – Everyone may not agree with me that Roman Holiday is the most perfect romantic-comedy ever made, but it is at least the most charming.

I’m Taking You to Italy! – David Lean’s Summertime (aka, Summer Madness – 1955) is a very romantic film set in a very romantic city. Can you guess which one?

Backpacking on Mount LeConte – Four Days and Forty Miles on the Appalacian Trail through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including Mount LeConte (the tallest mountain face in the Eastern United States), Newfound Gap, Charlie’s Bunion, Peck’s Corner, Boulevard and Alum Cave Trail.
